Request for Opt-Out Based on Religious Belief

Request for Opt-Out Based on Religious Belief

On June 27, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, affirming that parents and guardians may opt their children out of specific instructional materials that conflict with their sincerely held religious beliefs.

In the Carlsbad Unified School District, one of our core priorities is to foster supportive and inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive. To support families in this process, teachers will provide advance notice with an opt-out form link when instructional materials with potential religious implications are planned for classroom use.

Families with questions or concerns about instructional materials that may conflict with their sincerely held religious beliefs are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher or school site administrator. Families may also reach Instructional Services at (760) 331-5011. Students who opt out of specific instructional materials will be provided with an appropriate alternative assignment.
