Special Education Programs

  • Learning Centers and Directed Studied electives provide skill building in areas such as study and transition skills, as well as academic intervention support.

  • Special Day Classes are taught in small-group environments in order to work on academic, social, and behavioral goals based on each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special Day Classes are designed to increase student independence with the ultimate goal of participation in the general education setting for the majority of the school day.

    Special Day Class for Foundational Skills (Mild-Moderate)

    Located at Jefferson Elementary, Poinsettia Elementary (TK-5), Calavera Hills Middle, Aviara Oaks Middle, Valley Middle (6-8), and Carlsbad High (9-12) Schools

    Special Day Class for Fundamental Skills (Moderate-Severe)

    Located at Kelly Elementary (TK-5), Valley Middle (6-8), and Carlsbad High (9-12) Schools

    Special Day Class for Social Emotional Academic Support (SEAS)

    Located at Calavera Hills Elementary (TK-5), Calavera Hills Middle (6-8), and Carlsbad High (9-12) Schools

    The ASPIRE Special Day Class

    Located at Kelly Elementary (TK-5), Aviara Oaks Middle (6-8), and Sage Creek High (9-12) Schools

  • Preschool programs provide structured small-group instruction including opportunities for social interaction with typically developing peers. In addition to individualized instruction, preschool students receive general education preschool education.

    Located at Aviara Oaks Elementary and Buena Vista Elementary

  • The Adult Transition Program may be considered by the IEP team for transition-age youth who have not achieved a high school diploma, but have participated in four years of high school. These students continue to benefit from curriculum that includes skill areas including employment and independent living skills.

    Training through the Adult Transition Program is individualized based on each student's needs, and may include community volunteering, classes at MiraCosta College, or paid work experience through the CUSD WorkAbility Program.
