CUSD offers many specialized programs to meet varying educational and developmental needs.
Advanced Learner EducationA differentiated curriculum model is provided for all students at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels. The program for Advanced Learners focuses on deeper engagement in the general education curriculum and is delivered during the regular school day by the classroom teacher. |
AVIDAVID Secondary is a comprehensive program for grades 6–12 that bridges the gap between students’ aspirations and their readiness for college and careers. At its core is the AVID Elective, a daily class that builds academic skills, college and career knowledge, and student agency. Beyond the Elective, AVID strategies are integrated schoolwide, fostering a culture of rigor and support across all classrooms through research-based practices that boost student engagement and achievement. |
Career Pathways and Career Technical EducationCarlsbad Unified Career Pathways provide students with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in college and future careers. CUSD's 9 Career Pathways consist of high quality curriculum and instruction, career exploration and guidance, industry partnerships and work based learning opportunities, and student leadership development. |
English Language DevelopmentThe English Language Development Program provides services for students who speak a language other than English in their home and are not yet fully proficient in English. |
State Seal of BiliteracyThe Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district or county office of education in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy takes the form of a gold seal that appears on the transcript or diploma of the graduating senior to honor the skills our students have attained, encourage students to pursue biliteracy, and serve as a statement of accomplishment for future employers and college admissions. State Seal of Civic EngagementThe California State Seal of Civic Engagement (SSCE) is an award for public high school students who demonstrate excellence in civics education, understanding of government (U.S. and California Constitutions), and participation in community-based civic projects. It recognizes students with a gold seal on their diploma or transcript.

Supplemental Ed ServicesEvery Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which reauthorized and updated the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), provides states more authority on standards, assessments, accountability, supports, and interventions while preserving the general structure of the ESEA funding formulas. |
Special EducationThe Special Education Department offers innovative programs that foster independence, academics, communication, and social/emotional skills. Inclusion is a priority in our district, which allows students to learn and socialize with their general education peers to the fullest extent possible. |
