CUSD Receives Bicycle Helmet Donation from Granite Construction to Support Safety in Local Schools

Posted Date: 10/24/23 (3:02 PM)

Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) is proud to announce its partnership with Granite Construction to promote bicycle helmet safety among students. On August 23, 2023, CUSD launched its first annual bicycle permit policy in response to the city of Carlsbad’s declaration of a state of emergency for bicycles, citing a 233% increase in collisions. Since the start of the 2023-2024 academic school year, more than 1,200 CUSD students enrolled in grades K-12 have been issued a bicycle permit. In support of this initiative, Granite Construction has donated 30 brand new bicycle helmets.

“Safety is a core value at Granite Construction and our top priority. Whether it’s providing safety helmets to our employees or bicycle helmets for students in our community, we are always committed to promoting safe practices,” says Scott McArthur, Regional Vice President. “We are grateful for the opportunity to support the school district’s bike permit program by donating these helmets and proud to share our commitment to safety with the community in which we work.”

Understanding the importance of bicycle safety, the company has taken this proactive step to ensure the well-being of young riders, aims to reduce the risk of head injuries, and encourage responsible cycling habits among students. CUSD Superintendent Ben Churchill expressed gratitude for the donation, saying, “Donations from local businesses highlight the importance of partnerships between schools and the community. Granite Construction’s commitment to safety is commendable and will make a significant difference in keeping our students safe on their direct routes to school every day.”

The bicycle helmets donated by Granite Construction meet all safety standards and are designed to provide maximum protection during bike rides. Each helmet is equipped with adjustable straps to ensure a secure fit for students of all ages, making them comfortable and easy to use. Carlsbad Traffic Lieutenant Officer Alonso DeVelasco stated, “This is a great example of the community getting involved in promoting bicycle safety for everyone.”
